Job description

• The Senior Financial Underwriter computes rates for both renewing and prospective moderate to complex group Dental and Vision accounts. You will complete work assignments involving moderately complex to complex issues where the analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
• The Senior Financial Underwriter reports to the Manager, Financial Underwriting. You will:
• Prepare a variety of financial reports for large accounts
• Provide rationale and support to other areas within the organization and to clients regarding rate computations and financial activity
• Provide expense estimates and accurate analysis of financial exhibits
• Influence the department’s strategy
• Make decisions on moderately complex to complex issues regarding technical approach for project components
• Perform work without direction and exercise considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments

Key Responsibilities

• Recommends and communicates products and competitive pricing to meet customer requirements.
• Reviews contracts and certificates, working with Product and Compliance areas to evaluate the ability to match plans for takeover.
• Demonstrates strong knowledge of manual rating systems and how to utilize experience, provider, and management reporting data in making pricing decisions.
• Negotiates with Sales and Account Management as needed in preparing offers for new and existing business.
• May connect with agents/brokers and clients as needed to resolve risk, plan, and rating concerns.
• Responsible for the administrative processing of cases using various underwriting tools, systems, and databases.
• Ensures effective documentation and communication of underwriting decisions.
• Demonstrates strong time, organizational, and desk management skills.
• Provides mentoring and coaching to support the development of the technical skills of others and team growth.
• Conducts training for sales and/or underwriting staff as needed.
• Participates in project work to develop or improve underwriting processes.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience
• 5 or more years of underwriting Dental and Vision experience with rated groups
• Financial analysis and risk analysis experience
• Comprehensive understanding of risk pool management
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
