Job summary

Berkley One, a modern personal lines insurer, seeks a High Net Worth Personal Lines Underwriter focused on new business and agent relationships. You’ll evaluate risks, price appropriately, and collaborate across teams to ensure profitable growth while supporting our agency partners.

Based in Morristown, NJ or Midtown Manhattan with a hybrid schedule (4 days in-office, 1 day remote). 2+ years' underwriting experience in high net worth preferred.

• New Business Underwriting: underwrite new business daily with sound judgment.
• Risk Management Collaboration: partner to assess exposures and recommend solutions.

• Agent Relationship Management: build and maintain strong agent relationships.
• Appetite Consultation: educate agents on Berkley One’s risk appetite.
• Technology Utilization: use underwriting tools and analytics to monitor portfolio quality.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: work with Distribution and Marketing to grow business.

High Net Worth Personal Lines | New Business Focus | Agency Relationship Management

As a Personal Lines Underwriter focused on High Net Worth at Berkley One, you'll play a pivotal role in evaluating and underwriting new business risks, with a strong emphasis on profitable growth and relationship management. This position involves significant decision-making authority and collaboration across multiple teams to ensure high-quality underwriting outcomes.

This role will be based in one of our offices:

• Morristown, NJ
• Midtown Manhattan (Third Avenue between 47th and 48th street)

We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

We'll count on you for:

• New Business Underwriting: Focus on underwriting new business daily, leveraging expertise and sound judgment to select and price risks that align with Berkley One’s profitability goals.
• Risk Management Collaboration: Partner with risk management to assess exposures and recommend solutions that enhance the overall quality of the risk.
• Innovation and Process Improvement: Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation in underwriting practices and organizational priorities.
• Agent Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with a designated group of agents. Act as a trusted advisor by understanding their needs, coaching on solutions, and fostering loyalty to the Berkley One brand.
• Appetite Consultation: Educate agents on Berkley One’s risk appetite and guide them in applying this knowledge to appropriate risk selection.
• Technology Utilization: Use advanced underwriting tools and analytics to monitor portfolio quality and inform individual underwriting decisions.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Distribution and Marketing teams to co-develop strategies that drive business growth and enhance market presence.
• Other work as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or equivalent professional experience
• Industry Experience: Minimum of two years of underwriting experience in high net worth personal lines.
• Customer-Centric Mindset: Deep empathy for both insureds and agents, with a passion for delivering an exceptional brand experience and advocating for customer needs.
• Strong Communicator: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style to suit different audiences and situations.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role include:

• Base Salary Range: $75,000 – 130,000
• Eligible to participate in annual discretionary bonus.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
