Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist the Underground Foreman in overseeing daily operations and safety compliance.
• Provide direction to crew to ensure quality and efficiency.
• Perform site walkthroughs to verify materials and equipment usage.
• Coordinate with Foreman to resolve on-site issues and maintain schedules.
• Track daily work quantities and prepare reports as needed.
• Support in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Toolbox Talks.
• Mentor crew members and help develop future Foremen.

Position Summary

The Underground Leadman assists the Underground Foreman in supervising and coordinating the work of the underground crew while gaining the skills and experience necessary for future advancement to a Foreman role. This position plays a key role in ensuring safety, quality, and productivity on the job site.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Assist the Underground Foreman in overseeing daily operations and ensuring safety protocols are followed at all times
• Provide direction and guidance to crew members to ensure efficient and quality work
• Perform daily site walkthroughs to verify proper materials, tools, and equipment usage
• Work closely with the Foreman to resolve on-site issues or conflicts
• Monitor progress and maintain communication to ensure tasks meet project schedules
• Track and record daily work quantities and submit reports as needed
• Assist in daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and participate in weekly Toolbox Talks
• Ensure trenches are excavated, shored, or sloped according to safety standards and specifications
• Coordinate equipment and material needs with the Foreman and Dispatch
• Serve as a point of contact for crew members and provide mentorship and support
• Perform hands-on work alongside the crew as needed
• Continuously develop skills in underground utility installation, leadership, and project management
• Perform other duties as assigned by site supervision

Required Skills And Abilities

• Solid understanding of underground sewer, water, and storm drain installation
• Knowledge of trench safety, OSHA standards, and confined space procedures
• Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to motivate a team
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Willingness to learn and grow into a Foreman role

Education And Experience

• High school diploma or GED required
• 5+ years of underground utility construction experience
• At least 2 years in a leadership or mentoring role preferred
• Familiarity with MAG (Maricopa Association of Governments) specifications preferred

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat and dust
• Regular exposure to construction site hazards and moving equipment
• Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds
• Strong manual dexterity and coordination to operate tools and equipment
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
