Job summary

Prairie State Energy Campus is seeking a Section Supervisor Underground Operations to oversee a coal mining section, ensuring safety and production targets are met as part of a disciplined, compliant underground operation.

The role requires coordinating crew activities, enforcing procedures, and conducting regular inspections, with emphasis on roof conditions, gas and dust hazards, and equipment reliability. Strong leadership and knowledge of underground mining laws are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma required.
• Demonstrated leadership ability, specifically in an underground mining environment.
• Minimum of two (2) years’ Section Supervisor experience or four (4) years’ documented experience in a leadership or lead role.
• Mine Manager’s Papers (obtain within first testing date after accepting position, if not certified)
• Mine Examiner’s Papers required.
• Must have a valid Illinois State Driver’s License.
• Emergency Medical Training is preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of underground mining practices, equipment and procedures.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing coal mining.
• Ability to read mine plans and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Responsibilities

• Direct supervision of employees on a working section related to safety and production.
• Identify and supervise elimination of hazardous conditions from roof, dust, gas, and material handling.
• Supervise installation and maintenance of roof supports, ventilation controls, pumps, conveyors, and electrical systems.
• Mine coal according to plans using continuous mining equipment and transport to section loading point.
• Direct the section according to mine map projections and ensure sights and crosscuts are correct.
• Conduct pre-shift and on-shift examinations of equipment, section, roof, and roadways.
• Conduct safety meetings with crew and maintain safe work procedures.
• Provide ongoing training to the crew to ensure production requirements are met safely.
