Education, Experience, or Certifications

  • Formal equipment training from equipment manufacturer or trade school encouraged but not required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience operating and maintaining excavating and HDD equipment.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 strongly preferred.
  • Experience related to establishing roadside work zones and traffic control preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensuring crew members complete their daily tasks, included but not limited to:
    • Pre-trip vehicle and equipment inspections to comply with DOT regulations.
    • Train, educate, and support laborers and operators on tooling and equipment maintenance.
    • Review project bill-of-materials required for the day and ensure crew is properly stocked for the day.
    • Ensure PPE is compliant and used by all crew members (die-electric boots, hard hats, safety vests, etc.).
  • Develop project plan and assign tasks to laborers and operators to safely excavate to install or repair new conduit or cable systems, structures, or other related excavating tasks, ensuring quality workmanship is achieved or exceeded.
  • Lead the crew onsite to establish existing utilities’ paths or locate and mark private utilities for potholing. Provide direction to the laborers and operators to perform the potholing safely and according to company, client, and government specs and assist with potholing efforts as needed.
  • Guide team to properly couple, sweep, and build conduit systems, as well as install grade or subgrade structures, such as pedestals, vaults, concrete slabs, cabinets, ground rods.
  • Operate equipment and contribute to production efforts as needed to ensure project schedule and production metrics are met as often as possible.
  • Ensure proper restoral of disturbed earth to match or improve original condition prior to excavation.
  • Complete paperwork pertaining to the project, such as daily production reports, job safety analyses, or incident reports.
  • All other tasks as assigned related to underground utility construction.
Related Skills & Requirements
  • Safely stow, transport, and operate equipment, including but not limited to tracked and wheeled manned and unmanned equipment (mechanical excavators, vacuum excavators, directional drills, jack hammers, concrete saws, core drills).
  • Handle the physical demands of the job, including standing, bending, lifting, pulling, and climbing. Lifting and maneuvering a minimum of 65 pounds.
  • Work in extreme weather conditions throughout the year (heat, cold, wind, rain, snow).
  • Safely use hand tools (such as hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers) and power tools (gas or battery powered drills, chainsaws, etc.).
  • Valid driver’s license strongly preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Works well with a team.
Position Description

A typical week as an Underground Foreman at Custom Utilicom would entail a daily report to your Supervisor or Manager of the previous day’s efforts and to review the next project or task to complete. Once this is established, you would be required to lead a team to ensure the crew is equipped with proper materials, tools, and equipment to complete the expectations of the day.

Before leaving the garage, ensuring proper fluid levels on the crew’s trucks and equipment have been checked and addressed. Once on site, you would guide the crew to safely set up and begin excavating existing utilities to prepare for the installation or repair of buried facilities. You are responsible for the overall safety and daily success of your crew – leading and guiding them towards safely and effectively executing the project plans.

As the day winds down, you are expected to lead the team to safely shut down and secure the job site and any hazards that may exist during the construction process, or ensuring satisfactory restoral has been completed if construction is complete. After making sure all tools, equipment, and materials are accounted for and safely and securely loaded and tied down, your team would return to the garage to park the equipment for the day, and complete any vehicle maintenance or cleaning prior to clocking out for the day.
