Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM, seeks an engineering-focused Undergraduate Student to support the daily operation, organization, and maintenance of our machine shop. This role is ideal for a student who enjoys hands-on fabrication, prototyping, and learning to operate and maintain shop equipment.

As the UGS, you will gain exposure to 3D printing, SolidWorks, CAM software, and equipment maintenance while contributing to a safe and efficient shop environment.

Job description

What You Will Do

C-NR is seeking an engineering-focused Undergraduate Student (UGS) to support the daily operation, organization, and maintenance of our machine shop. This position is ideal for a student who enjoys hands-on work, fabrication, prototyping, and learning how to operate and maintain shop equipment.

The UGS will help maintain shop tools and equipment, organize tooling and workspaces, support fabrication and prototyping projects, and promote a clean, safe, and efficient working environment. The position will also provide opportunities to develop skills in 3D printing, SolidWorks, CAM software, equipment maintenance, and machine shop operations.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Currently pursuing an engineering degree or a closely related technical field.
  • Ability to safely perform hands‑on work in a machine shop environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with machining, fabrication, prototyping, or mechanical assembly.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, or other shop equipment.
Education / Experience

Position requires a to be enrolled in an undergraduate program in STEM from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

No Clearance

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre‑employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
