What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply. This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Prototype Fabrication Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides technical experience and proficiency in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's nuclear stockpile readiness efforts.

The selected candidate will be joining a dedicated staff of engineers, machinists, quality control professionals, and maintenance technicians to ensure that complex manufacturing equipment is operating at their optimum level.

The successful applicant will join the Prototype Fabrication Integrated Logistics and Asset Management Group. You will have the opportunity to support diverse engineering assignments within a manufacturing environment.

Typical assignments will include supporting the installation, troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance of advanced CNC mills and lathes.

In each of these areas you will be required to learn, support, and ensure that the diverse capabilities of the division are maintained properly to ensure continuous operations.

R&D Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)

The selected candidate will optimize machinery reliability, safety, and performance by designing preventative maintenance programs, supporting corrective maintenance activities, and aiding in the integration of new equipment.

R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

In addition to what was outlined at level 1, the selected candidate shall also have experience designing, planning and executing complex projects within a manufacturing environment.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
Technical Expertise
  • Working knowledge applying engineering practices and principles supporting the integration and repair of complex manufacturing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the requirements of an effective preventative maintenance program.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (e.g. Creo, SolidWorks, NX, Catia).
  • Demonstrated experience writing work instructions, safety documentation, integrated work management documents and other procedures for others to follow in the maintenance of industrial equipment.
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret machine tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to enable the proper understanding of machine tool subsystem functions and how they integrate into overall performance.
Project Management
  • Knowledge of and experience in project management for technical or operational work, including the development of project plans, managing scope, schedule, and budget; and identifying and managing risks for projects of limited scope and complexity.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.
  • Strong writing ability and verbal communication skills required to independently prepare and present data and reports to peers, senior colleagues, management, and customers.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D level 2
  • Demonstrated ability to develop engineered solutions to complex electrical or mechanical systems challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose complex equipment to identify needed repairs to components and subsystems.
  • Advanced working knowledge and experience supporting and implementing preventative maintenance programs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects of advanced scope and complexity.
Education/Experience at Level 1

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Level 2

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience supporting maintenance of CNC machine tools.
  • College transcripts reflecting a GPA of 3.0 or greater
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
