Job description

What You Will Do Join Pit Technologies (PT-3) Assembly and Welding Group, where we support the research, development, and manufacturing of nuclear pits in direct support of national security. PT-3 operations include the assembly and welding of weapons-related and non-weapons-related products containing Plutonium-239, as well as support for sub-critical experiments, science campaigns, and Department of Homeland Security and global security missions.

What You Will Do Join Pit Technologies (PT-3) Assembly and Welding Group, where we support the research, development, and manufacturing of nuclear pits in direct support of national security. PT-3 operations include the assembly and welding of weapons-related and non-weapons-related products containing Plutonium-239, as well as support for sub-critical experiments, science campaigns, and Department of Homeland Security and global security missions. As an Undergraduate Student for the PT-3 Assembly and Welding team, you will work in a team-based nuclear manufacturing environment s[BO1.1]upporting LANL's plutonium facility (PF-4). The majority of work is supporting engineers who are experts in precision assembly, welding, robotics, product testing, and/or material handling activities. This position will develop knowledge and experience using Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety, and environment/waste compliance requirements. Work directly relates to national security objectives, requiring the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.

The responsibilities of the selected candidate will include:

  • Applying engineering principles, practices, and tools to continuously improve manufacturing processes.
  • Contributing to the successful completion of technical projects by assisting in the design, analysis, verification, validation, and implementation of practical engineering solutions.
  • Assisting in the writing of technical documents and presenting technical work at internal and external meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Prioritizing safety and security in executing all work tasks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and tools as demonstrated by experience in research, design, analysis, verification, and validation activities.
  • Intermediate analytical thinking skills, including demonstrated experience in the analysis, manipulation, and interpretation of data.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality results in a timely manner.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency in computer programming, preferably in broadly used, general-purpose programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, or MATLAB).
  • Application of advanced mathematical methods to develop models for engineering applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy concepts, welding processes, or manufacturing experience.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
