Job summary

Oakland University is seeking motivated undergraduate students to join the Song Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for Fall 2026/Winter 2027.

The lab studies centrosome assembly and mitotic spindle organization in C. elegans using genetics, molecular biology, protein analysis, confocal imaging, and CRISPR. Federal Work-Study paid or NIH-funded/volunteer positions are available, with 10–20 hours per week over 2–3 days.

Qualifications

• Interest in biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, developmental biology, or biomedical research.
• Strong attention to detail and reliability.
• Willingness to learn new techniques and receive feedback.
• Ability to commit approximately 10-20 hours per week, over 2-3 days.
• Preference for commitment of at least two semesters.
• Prior research experience is not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain general lab cleanliness and organization
• Prepare basic lab materials, buffers, plates, and reagents
• Maintain C. elegans strain, PCR-based genotyping, and molecular biology experiments
• Conduct genetic interactions, immunostaining, and microscopy
• Support graduate students and the PI in ongoing research projects
• Participate in lab meetings and learn responsible research practices
