Job description

Join to apply for the Ultrasound Technologist (U) Per Diem role at Tufts Medicine.

Hours: Per Diem, Variable PRN. Shifts are typically mid-shift and evening shift, with occasional morning or weekend shifts. Includes on-call duties.

Location: Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on using various imaging techniques to aid in diagnosis and treatment. Responsibilities include operating Ultrasound Technology to produce images of internal structures. It is a clinical technologist role requiring specialized knowledge gained through vocational training and experience, primarily applied to patient care or scientific/laboratory jobs. Works under moderate supervision, handling routine problems with some interpretation or deviation from standard procedures.

Job Overview

Performs diagnostic ultrasound exams under the direction of physicians or radiologists, utilizing high-frequency sound waves to investigate internal body aspects. Requires technical knowledge of acoustics and anatomy to tailor exams to individual patients safely, accurately, and efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree or two-year certificate in Ultrasound.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification within one year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of work experience as an ultrasound technologist.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate ultrasound equipment, manipulate transducers, and adjust settings to obtain clear images. Record examinations.
  • Assist radiologists in interpretation by describing anatomy and acoustic characteristics.
  • Compare current and previous ultrasound images, document findings, and prepare reports for radiologist review.
  • Assist with procedures requiring ultrasound guidance, such as biopsies and aspirations.
  • Report equipment issues and safety concerns.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and holiday shifts as per policy.
  • Perform procedures independently, demonstrating judgment and initiative.
  • Provide excellent patient service, educating patients about procedures and exceeding service expectations.
  • Maintain professionalism and impartiality regarding diversity and individual differences.
  • Respond calmly to schedule changes, cooperate with team members, and participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and maintain department supplies.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking, lifting 30-35 lbs., pushing equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for operating equipment and computers.
  • Ability to see ultrasound screens and reports.
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Clerical skills.
  • Proficiency in OB/GYN, small parts, venous, carotid, and abdominal ultrasounds, including procedures like biopsies and aspirations.
