Job Summary

$20,000 sign-on bonus
MGH Chelsea, outpatient
Hours: Monday & Friday 8:00a-6:30p (hours may be flexible in the future)

Summary

Under general supervision and following established procedures, the incumbent operates ultrasound imaging equipment to acquire images and communicates sonographer impressions to interpreting physicians. The incumbent must have problem-solving skills and be an active participant in departmental initiatives. The incumbent must effectively communicate with students, peers, patients, and physicians to ensure the safety and quality of imaging. Exercises independent judgment to modify scan techniques for optimal image quality. Must be solution-oriented, exemplify professional, respectful, and inclusive behavior with all staff, patients, visitors, and students, and actively participate in departmental initiatives. The incumbent participates in holiday, and shift rotations as required by the department.

Essential Functions
Patient and exam verification:
  • Ensures that two points of patient identification, date of birth & full name are obtained to verify that the correct patient is being treated.
  • Reviews the order for exam and indications, and the patient’s chart for pertinent clinical history.
  • Prepares and cleans the equipment and room for each patient. Maintain stock levels to ensure rooms are ready to care for patients.
Patient Care & Collaboration:
  • Uses clear communication when explaining the exam to the patient, taking into consideration physical and emotional needs. Ensures understanding and maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).
  • Works collaboratively with the leadership team to ensure a smooth and efficient patient flow, as well as optimal utilization of US scanners.
  • Delivers patient care under the scope of license/training.
Department Coverage:
  • Remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.
Clinical Performance:
  • Performs all duties pertaining to the performance of clinical ultrasound exams.
  • Knowledge on US equipment operation, protocols, and other technical aspects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Research Performance:
  • Must be able to perform support tasks as outlined by the department.
Qualifications
Education

Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma Diagnostic Medical Sonographer required or Other Certificate/Diploma Diagnostic Imaging required and Associate’s Degree Diagnostic Imaging preferred

Licenses and Credentials

Certified Sonographer - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required within 90 days

OR

Sonography [R.T.(S)(ARRT)] - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required within 90 days

Experience

Ultrasound scanning experience with multiple patient populations 2-3 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Comprehensive understanding of computer operations relating to Imaging, Electronic Health Records, Reporting Systems, PACS, and all Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the department, relating to patient information and management.
  • Possesses analytical abilities necessary to effectively utilize advanced knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, procedures, and anatomy.
  • Exemplifies flexibility and willingness to adapt to the operational needs and presents as a positive representative of the department.
  • Excellent attention to detail, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations.
  • Maintains effective working relations and communication with colleagues and patients.
