Ultrasound Technologist Job Description

The Ultrasound Technologist uses ultrasound equipment to perform diagnostic sonographic examinations, locating, evaluating, and recording critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. This role involves providing on-call services for after-hours and emergency cases, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Working under direct supervision, the Technologist ensures the accuracy and quality of ultrasound examinations, supporting physicians in making informed patient care decisions and contributing to an optimal healthcare experience for patients.

Key Responsibilities

1. Perform Ultrasound Examinations: Conduct high-quality routine and specialized ultrasound procedures following established protocols to minimize repeats and aid accurate diagnosis and treatment.
2. Patient Safety and Comfort: Ensure patient safety and comfort by explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and positioning patients appropriately.
3. Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate, troubleshoot, and optimize ultrasound equipment to produce high-quality images for accurate interpretation.
4. Documentation: Record patient information, examination details, and preliminary findings accurately in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), resolving any errors to maintain comprehensive records.
5. Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, including radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals, to ensure coordinated patient care and timely sharing of critical findings.
6. Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Radiology, Imaging, or related educational program.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a relevant role.
• Licensure/Certifications: BLS (CPR) from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider, ARDMS, ARRT RT(S), or CCI RVS. Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT/RVS) required for sites without onsite Vascular Lab (e.g., APH, ARMC, MedCenters). All current Cone Health Sonographers have 2 years to meet RVT requirements; new candidates have 16 months.
• Specialized Certifications: OB/GYN, Abdomen, Breast, Vascular, or Peds certifications preferred. RVT/RVS certification preferred for sites with onsite Vascular Lab (e.g., MCH, WLH).
