Job description

Texas Statewide Transportation / Highway Practice Leader

Location: Anywhere in Texas (Remote / Hybrid / In Office (Austin or Houston)
Position Type: Regular, Full-Time

The Opportunity

We’re partnering with a nationally respected transportation engineering firm that is expanding its Texas highway and transportation footprint and looking for a proven leader to help take it to the next level.

This is not a “just manage projects” role.

This is a statewide leadership position for someone who wants to build, grow, and lead a high-impact transportation/highway practice across Texas — shaping strategy, mentoring teams, delivering complex work, and strengthening key client relationships (including TxDOT).

If you’re energized by ownership, influence, and legacy-level impact — keep reading.

What You’ll Do

As the Texas Statewide Transportation / Highway Practice Leader, you’ll serve as both a technical authority and business leader, guiding major highway projects while helping define the long‑term direction of the practice.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead large, complex, and high‑visibility transportation and highway design projects across Texas

  • Provide strategic oversight of project delivery, quality, schedules, and budgets

  • Review and certify engineering plans, models, and technical documents to meet quality and compliance standards

  • Develop and evaluate roadway design alternatives and recommend optimal solutions

  • Oversee conceptual designs, schematics, PS&E packages, cost estimates, and construction documentation

  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineers, project managers, and technical staff

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and primary liaison to key clients and public agencies

  • Build and strengthen relationships with clients, teaming partners, subconsultants, and internal stakeholders

  • Support business development efforts including proposals, pursuits, interviews, and strategic growth initiatives

  • Direct multi‑disciplinary teams in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment

  • Manage contracts, scopes, fees, schedules, and project financial performance

  • Help shape staffing plans, resource allocation, and long‑term practice growth strategy

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program

  • 15+ years of experience in transportation and/or highway engineering

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Texas (or ability to obtain)

  • Deep expertise with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, Geopak, and/or InRoads

  • Strong working knowledge of AASHTO, TxDOT, and local design criteria

  • Solid understanding of highway construction means and methods

  • Proven experience delivering large, complex transportation projects

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and inspire technical teams

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem‑solving skills

  • Experience with contract negotiations, fee development, scope definition, invoicing, and progress reporting

Preferred Experience

  • Established track record of winning work in Texas (especially TxDOT‑related pursuits)

  • Active involvement in relevant professional organizations and industry groups

Why This Role Stands Out

This firm is intentionally investing in leadership, growth, and long‑term opportunity — and this role sits squarely at the center of that strategy.

You’ll have:

  • Statewide influence and visibility

  • The ability to shape a practice, not just manage projects

  • A leadership team that values collaboration, trust, and accountability

  • A platform to grow people, projects, and your own career

Compensation & Benefits

A competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits program that includes:

  • Generous base salary, bonus, paid time off and paid holidays

  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development support
