Job summary

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks an Oceans Special Project Attorney to advance marine wildlife protections through law and advocacy. This full-time role supports the Oceans program, with supervision, mentorship, and opportunities to develop career skills in public interest environmental law.

The position is a two-year temporary assignment, remote or Oakland, reporting to the Oceans Director. A JD, bar admission, and 2–5 years of civil environmental litigation experience are required.

Qualifications

  • JD required.
  • Bar admission in state; CA or DC membership a plus.
  • 2–5 years civil litigation experience; environmental law preferred.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Familiarity with environmental laws.
  • Commitment to environmental protection.
  • Strong work ethic, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Commitment to justice, equity and inclusion.
  • Scientific literacy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Litigate under supervision of experienced attorneys, including oral argument.
  • Conduct legal research and writing, memos, briefs, cite-checking, and filings.
  • Advocacy including comments on proposed rulemakings and environmental reviews; oral testimony.
  • Coordinate with teams and partners to advance ocean policy reform and biodiversity protections.
  • Research and develop expertise on ocean issues and science.
  • Prepare communications: press releases, op-eds, fact sheets, alerts, white papers.
  • Perform other project work as needed to meet priorities.
