General Description:

The Suicide Prevention Manager will serve as a vital team member of the Veterans Mental Health Department (VMHD) responsible for actively participating in TVC’s efforts to reduce suicide among Texas veterans and service members. This includes providing training to veteran-serving organizations and community stakeholders on suicide prevention efforts and related mental health constructs (e.g., evidence-based practices, screening/assessment, risk factors, protective factors, gatekeeping, prevention, crisis intervention, postvention, lethal means restriction, etc.). This also includes working closely with stakeholders including governmental agencies, local coalitions, and community partners on cross-agency efforts, projects, and initiatives aimed at reducing suicide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Plans, develops, reviews, revises, and implements trainings related to suicide reduction efforts (e.g., evidence-based practices, screening/assessment, risk factors, protective factors, gatekeeping, prevention, crisis intervention, postvention, lethal means, etc.).
  2. Conducts training in-person, through distance learning, or e-learning environment; facilitates workshops and meetings.
  3. Actively participates and/or leads state and local efforts to reduce suicide among Texas veteran and service members.
  4. Develops research-informed and culturally competent strategies to improve suicide prevention efforts across Texas in rural and metropolitan areas.
  5. Identifies and engages community stakeholders which serve veterans on collaborative efforts to reduce veteran and service member suicide.
  6. Represents the Texas Veterans Commission and the Veteran Mental Health Department at conferences, business meetings, and panel discussions.
  7. Develops partnerships with a variety of individuals, groups, and stakeholders.
  8. Composes, reviews, and edits training materials and reports.
  9. Performs related work or special projects as assigned.

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or other field relevant to mental health. College Transcripts are required and must be provided before an interview can be extended; it is preferred they be attached to the application.

Minimum Experience:

Five (5) years of experience in providing mental health services.

Additional Requirements:

  • A valid Texas Driver’s License must be provided within 90 days of hire.
  • License or ability to obtain a Texas license to practice as a mental health professional, such as LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or Psychologist within one year from the date of hire.

Preferred Experience and Qualification:

  • Experience working with those experiencing mental health concerns, especially suicidality.
  • Experience providing training and/or education on mental health topics.
  • Experience working with collaborative suicide prevention efforts.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health issues.
  • Experience working with veterans, service members, and veteran families.
  • Experience in building and sustaining partnerships with federal, state, and local stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of suicide prevention strategies at the national, state, and local levels.
  • Knowledge of mental health concerns and barriers to accessing supportive resources.
  • Skill in identifying best practices related to suicide prevention and veteran mental health.
  • Skill in generating and providing training on the unique needs and resources for veterans and families.
  • Ability to research, gather, assemble, and analyze data to devise strategies for improving suicide prevention efforts in rural and metropolitan areas.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to evaluate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide training to others about issues related to veteran suicide and mental health needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Environmental & Physical Conditions:

Normal office work environment, mostly sedentary in nature. May involve walking; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive hand/wrist/finger motions while using the computer.
