Job summary

McHenry County College is seeking capable tutors to support students across Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions. Tutors provide tailored help, reinforce concepts, and develop effective study strategies in a collaborative, in-person or hybrid setting.

Responsibilities include analyzing student needs, answering questions, guiding assignments, and offering feedback to boost academic performance. A high school diploma and six months tutoring experience are required.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least a high school diploma and six months tutoring experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the subject areas being tutored.
  • Familiarity with academic writing styles (APA, MLA, Chicago).

Responsibilities

  • Answer questions and clarify areas of concern.
  • Review classroom topics and assignments.
  • Assist students with homework, projects, tests, papers, and research.
  • Provide constructive feedback and academic guidance.

  • Support supervising staff as assigned.

Workweek

Up to 29 Hours | Spring, Summer, and Fall opportunities. Flexible schedule based on department needs and tutor availability. In person and hybrid modalities are available based on department needs.

Position Summary

Tutors play a key role in enhancing students’ academic performance by offering tailored support and guidance. They work closely with students to identify learning challenges, reinforce subject knowledge, and develop effective study strategies. By creating a positive and engaging learning environment, tutors help students build confidence, master key concepts, and achieve their educational goals.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Analyze student needs and determine manageable concepts that align with the student’s learning style
  • Answer student questions and clarify areas of concern
  • Review classroom or curricula topics and assignments
  • Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks
  • Demonstrate the best academic practices for specific subjects
  • Provide students with positive and constructive feedback
  • Identify student’s academic challenges and recommend additional resources or support
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma
  • Six months of tutoring experience
  • Proficiency in the subject(s) area being tutored, demonstrated through academic achievement, certifications, or practical experience
Course Specific Requirements
  • NAE: Familiarity with clinicals
  • BIO: Familiarity with assisting students in Cadaver Lab
  • ECE: Familiarity with assisting students in observations
  • WRITING: Familiarity with APA, MLA, and Chicago Style
  • MATH: Familiarity with TI-83, TI-84, or TI-nspire calculator
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Familiar with and able to help with clinicals, if applicable to the content area
