Job description

Job Summary

The Dr. Julia N. Visor Academic Center helps students transition to Illinois State University, advance academically, and develop skills through programs such as study groups, writing assistance, and workshops.

As a tutor, you will provide individualized and small‑group instruction to students in lower‑level courses such as POL 101, 106, and 140. You should be friendly, diligent, and able to communicate effectively with students and supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Conduct small‑group tutoring sessions on a weekly basis for assigned courses.
• Assist students with course content, study strategies, and academic skills.
• Communicate with Graduate Assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services regarding scheduling and additional duties.
• Maintain tutoring records and submit required documentation as directed.

Functional Expectations

• Effectively communicate on a daily basis with students, supervisors, and the Academic Center staff.

Required Qualifications

• Overall GPA of at least 2.80.
• Grade of A or high B in the course(s) being tutored.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in the subject area and ability to convey knowledge clearly in spoken and written form.
• GPA of 3.00 or higher; additional courses in the subject area are preferred.

Work Hours

6–15 hours per week, including occasional nights and weekends.

Pay

$15.00 per hour.
