Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago is seeking a part-time tutor for the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The tutor will provide academic support to students, crafting effective tutoring plans to enhance their skills and confidence.

The position requires a Bachelor's Degree and preferences for tutoring experience and completion of tutoring certification. Tutors will work closely with students in a diverse community college environment.

The salary ranges between $17.48 and $24.59 per hour, with benefits available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a relevant field.
  • Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring at the postsecondary level is preferred.

TUTOR – PART‑TIME – ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

TRUMAN COLLEGE

Truman College's Tutoring Center is a study space designed to help students thrive academically in various areas of study. The center supports English as a Second Language (ESL) students by tutoring students in all skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking, etc.) and levels (from beginning reading/writing to college prep/essay writing) within the ESL program. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work. This position helps students integrate and apply effective study skills, note‑taking, test‑taking strategies, time management, and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual or group basis.
  • Tutor students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.
  • Craft effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths.
  • Motivate students and provide them with confidence to feel successful.
  • Provide students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits.
  • Schedule individual tutoring sessions based on student requests.
  • Assist the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
  • Help students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation toward learning and studying, build self‑confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
  • Tutor students and provide strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities.
  • Participate in tutor orientation and attend professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.
  • May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.
  • Provide ongoing communication with students, instructors and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students.
  • Maintain records on tutoring activities. Provide periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field of study related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training. Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.
  • Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the postsecondary instructional level is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.
  • Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additional Information

Salary Range: $17.48- $24.59 per hour

Offer salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
