Summary

Position Type Student Job Summary/Basic Function
Tutors provide academic support to students by meeting with them to clarify course content, enhance comprehension, and strengthen study and learning strategies. Responsibilities may include reviewing instructional materials, discussing textbook concepts, anticipating potential examination questions, assisting with idea development for written assignments, and guiding students through problem‑solving processes. Tutoring services are intended to supplement, not replace, classroom instruction and faculty teaching.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled as a Bay College student at the time of employment.
  • Demonstrated mastery of the subject area to be tutored, typically evidenced by earning a grade of B or higher and/or receiving a strong instructor recommendation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to use video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and punctuality.
  • Consistent display of appropriate and professional behavior.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use Outlook Email, Outlook Calendar and Microsoft Forms.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and/or prior experience in a tutoring or academic support role.
  • Understanding of the academic needs and support requirements of community college students.
  • Ability to adapt to changing tasks, priorities, and work environments.
  • Ability to exercise courtesy, tact, and discretion when interacting with students and community members.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion when responding to common inquiries or student concerns.

Job Duties
  • Provide tutorial and academic support services for students in a group setting.
  • Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Bay College policies and the Tutor Training Manual.
  • Participate in an initial training program and in any on‑going training.
  • Organize, facilitate, and track tutorial sessions.
  • Participate in projects such as workshops, training materials, or outreach projects to develop Bay College’s repertoire of services.
  • Maintain communications with staff and coordinators.
  • Attend tutoring staff meetings.
  • Participate in program evaluation.
  • Assist in maintaining and cleaning tutoring rooms and reception area.
  • Assist with the general operation of the center. Tasks include reproducing reference materials, greeting students at the front desk and organizing tutors’ reports.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the program manager.
  • Maintain competence in the course(s) via systematic review of content.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
