Job summary

Ryan Lawn & Tree is seeking a Turf Crew Leader to supervise field crews on residential and commercial routes, ensuring quality mowing, trimming, and blowing work. You will oversee on‑site safety, route execution, and equipment readiness while maintaining strong customer relations.

The role requires a valid Iowa driver’s license, 3OT certification, and the ability to lift up to 35 lbs. You will participate in ongoing training, overtime as needed, and year‑round duties including snow removal.

Qualifications

• Background check and pre‑employment drug screening required.
• 3OT - Ornamental Turf Application certification/license.
• Legally operate company vehicles with a valid Iowa driver's license.
• Physically perform the work, including lifting up to 35 lbs; uneven terrain.
• Operate riding mowers, string trimmers, and blowers; follow PPE rules.
• Lead and train crew members effectively.
• Work overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

• Lead the assigned Turf crew on site and enforce safety and quality standards.
• Review daily route schedule, locations, scope, and notes before departure.
• Inspect devices (iPhone, iCREWtek) and clock crew before/after shifts.
• Brief crew en route and assign roles for each property.
• Park vehicle, inspect site, and document any discrepancies with photos.
• Verify task understanding and correct operation of equipment.
• Record time and materials in iCREWtek for each site.
• Walk property to verify quality and coordinate access with managers.
• Report accidents, injuries, or damage immediately to Turf Manager.
• Close gates and comply with pesticide posting requirements.
• Perform end-of-day equipment cleanup and prep for next day.

Turf Crew Leader

Salary: $21.00 - $28.00 per hour, based on experience.

About The Role

Lead a Turf crew in the field to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality mowing, trimming, and blowing services on assigned routes for new and existing customers in residential and commercial settings.

Turf Crew Leader duties include on-site crew supervision, timekeeping, material recording and ensuring all properties are left visually appealing with trimmings cleared from driveways, sidewalks, and hardscape.

What You'll Do

• Lead the assigned Turf crew on site and hold crew members to RJ Lawn & Landscape mowing, trimming, and blowing quality and safety standards.
• Review daily route schedule prior to departure, including job site locations, scope of work, customer notes, and any site‑specific instructions; ask pertinent questions before leaving for the job site.
• Inspect and confirm iPhone and iCREWtek devices are functioning properly; clock crew members in on iCREWtek and confirm needed equipment and materials before departure.
• Brief crew en route between job sites on roles, mowing patterns, trimming standards, customer notes, and any site‑specific instructions for each property.
• Park and secure company vehicle at each job site; survey property on arrival to confirm it is clear of obstacles, toys, and pet waste before mowing begins; report scope discrepancies or existing damage to the Turf Manager with photo documentation.
• Confirm all crew members understand their tasks and are operating riding mowers, string trimmers, and blowers correctly; ensure trimmings and clippings are cleared from all driveways, sidewalks, and hardscape before leaving each property.
• Record all time and materials in iCREWtek for each job site before leaving; clock crew members out of iCREWtek at end of day.
• Walk the property to verify quality before leaving each job site; communicate with property managers or groundskeepers about scheduled visits, access concerns, or turf issues identified on site.
• Report accidents, injuries, property damage, absenteeism, and tardiness to the Turf Manager immediately; photograph any damage that occurred during the crew’s visit.
• Confirm all gates on client properties are closed and secured before leaving each job site.
• Confirm Iowa pesticide application posting requirements are met on any property receiving chemical applications; adhere to chemical handling and storage protocols throughout the day.
• Perform end‑of‑day equipment cleanup, debris removal, and preparation for the following day’s work.
• Maintain customer relations with all RJ Lawn & Landscape customers on assigned routes.
• Attend company meetings as requested for overall company development.
• Attend continuing education classes as required to maintain certifications.
• Perform snow removal duties as assigned as part of year‑round employment.
• Promote, demonstrate and enforce safety procedures & company policies.
• Support and enforce RJ Lawn & Landscape vision, mission, and core values.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

• Pass a background check and pre‑employment drug screening.
• Possess and maintain 3OT - Ornamental Turf Application certification/license.
• Legally operate company vehicles with a valid Iowa driver's license.
• Physically perform the work, including lifting up to 35 lbs; bending, lifting, and walking on uneven, sloped, or rough terrain; shoveling sand, rock, dirt, and snow.
• Operate machinery in a safe and effective manner, including but not limited to: riding lawn mowers, string trimmers, and blowers.
• Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary.
• Read and understand technical information competently.
• Demonstrate basic math skills and conversions.
• Lead and train crew members effectively.
• Work overtime as needed.
• Demonstrate problem‑solving skills by identifying and resolving issues in a timely manner.
• Maintain adaptability in a dynamic work environment, managing competing demands and unexpected events.
• Communicate clearly and persuasively in both positive and challenging situations.

Measure of Accountability

• Adhere to route time budgets on assigned jobs.
• Crew quality on assigned jobs (customer compliments or complaints).
• Accuracy of time, material, and job note entries in iCREWtek.
• Attendance record.
