Job summary

Tulsa Flyer, part of Tulsa Local News Initiative, seeks a general assignment reporter to cover Tulsa-area news with strong community ties and newsroom collaboration. You will report to the deputy editor and balance daily beats with longer enterprise projects while evolving with the newsroom.

You will engage directly with residents, attend community events, and produce clear, accessible reporting in a startup nonprofit environment that values learning and diverse perspectives.

Qualifications

• Two years of daily local newsroom experience.
• Strong news judgment and strong writing across news and feature styles.
• Ability to work under deadline, prioritize and manage multiple stories.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of people inside and outside the newsroom.
• Commitment to local, public service journalism with impactful reporting.
• Experience with community-centered journalism and engagement practices.
• Proficiency in using public records and data in reporting.
• Multimedia storytelling and comfort with digital tools for newsgathering and audience engagement.

Responsibilities

• Produce daily news stories on assigned beat or general topics, balancing with enterprise and investigative projects.
• Cultivate a diverse network of sources across Tulsa communities.
• Engage directly with residents to identify stories with community engagement input.
• Understand local issues and power structures to provide context for readers.
• Write in a solutions-focused voice with accessible formats (guides, explainers, service journalism).
• Collaborate with reporters and editors in a collaborative newsroom.
• Use multimedia storytelling techniques to aid understanding for all audiences.
• Refine story ideas with editors and meet daily and long-term deadlines.
• Participate in community events and TLNI-sponsored activities throughout the year.
