Position Description

Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with PhD studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Mechanical Engineering awarded 305 undergraduate, 24 MS and 13 PhD degrees in FY 2020-21. Department enrollment includes 800 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students. Among the 30 tenure-track, tenured, research professors and professors of practice, roughly 30% are women and minorities. In recent years, department faculty have been awarded nearly 4 million dollars in externally sponsored research, of which 70% were from federal sources. Faculty are known for cited work on bio-inspired devices, computational mechanics, vortex dynamics, turbulence, microfluidics, nanoimprinting, physiological microstructure and translational nutrition, cardiovascular dynamics, nanomedicine, energetic and biological materials, and robust control methods. Department faculty recognitions and awards include membership in the US National Academy of Engineering and foreign Academies of Engineering and the Sciences, recognitions as Thomson-Reuters highly cited scholars, PECASE, Young Investigator DOD awards, and NSF CAREER awards. Major/Essential Functions

Conduct numerical computations using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method; Develop advanced models to simulate drop-wall interactions using SPH; Characterize impact regimes of fuel drop impact; Investigate characteristics of thermal sprays; Derive engineering models to predict thermal spray behaviors for advanced manufacturing applications.

Required Qualifications

PhD in area of project specialization. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Independent research abilities to survey literature and develop new research areas. Excellent fundamental knowledge in thermal sciences and manufacturing technologies. Excellent programming skills in Fortran, C, C++, Matlab; Excellent understanding of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
