The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) seeks a Respiratory Therapist on the Skilled Unit at Georgia Regional Hospital – Atlanta, located in Decatur, GA. Under supervision, you assess, treat and care for clients with breathing disorders and operate related equipment.

Responsibilities include determining treatment requirements, educating patients and families, monitoring responses, and providing emergency care.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of job-related experience; or one year at the lower level Respiratory Therapy Tech 1 (HCT080) or position equivalent.
  • Must hold current Georgia Respiratory Therapist license.

Responsibilities

  • Determines requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians’ orders
  • Educates clients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques
  • Uses respiratory equipment and therapies as prescribed, including ventilators and gas delivery systems
  • Inspects, cleans, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe operation
  • Monitors patient responses to therapy, including vital signs and arterial blood gases, and consults with physicians as needed
  • Provides emergency care, including artificial respiration and CPR support
  • Reads prescriptions and assesses patient condition to adjust therapy as necessary
  • Works with a team of clinicians to manage patient care

Job Description

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Respiratory Therapist on the Skilled Unit at Georgia Regional Hospital – Atlanta, located in Decatur, GA.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, they assess, treat and care for clients with breathing disorders. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures. Maintain client records and select, assemble, check and operate equipment.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Determines requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians’ orders

  • Educates clients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate

  • disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises, the use of medications, and respiratory equipment

  • Enforces safety rules and ensures careful adherence to physicians’ orders

  • Inspects, cleans, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment functions safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary

  • Maintains charts that contain clients’ pertinent identification and therapy information

  • Monitors client’s physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consult with physician if adverse reactions occur

  • Provides emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation

  • Reads the prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews client information to assess patient condition

  • Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment

  • Works as part of a team of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to manage client care.
