Job summary

Merit School of Music is seeking a part-time Trombone Instructor to teach private lessons through the MMIC program at Rachel Carson Elementary School in Chicago. The role may also include leading a beginning brass sectional and collaborating with school staff to support student growth.

The instructor will work with 8–10 trombone students in the Carson band, deliver after-school instruction, and participate in Merit's broader teaching community, with potential future opportunities across Merit

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience and training.
  • Proven success teaching trombone to elementary to middle school students.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • High level of personal musicianship.
  • Reliable access to transportation for off-site teaching locations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality private trombone lessons and, when applicable, the beginning brass sectional.
  • Coordinate with the Carson Elementary band director to tailor lessons to student needs.
  • Collaborate with Merit Band Program faculty to support student development.
  • Provide Merit staff with assessments and recommendations for additional Merit programming.
  • Attend Merit faculty or department meetings as scheduled.
