Overview
The position is to transport students for athletic trips and field trips while managing appropriate student behavior.
Classification
- Compensation: $21.65/hour, in accordance with work agreement
- Non‑Exempt, safety sensitive position
- Enrolled in random pool for alcohol/drug testing per policy
Responsibilities
- Safely transport students to and from activities, including athletic and field trips
- Effectively manage student behavior and maintain a cooperative attitude with students, peers, supervisors, parents, school personnel, and community
- Ensure proper security of students in required safety equipment and restraints (wheelchairs, harnesses, etc.)
- Assist non‑ambulatory students into and out of the vehicle
- Keep vehicle clean, safe, and presentable; perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections
- Evacuate vehicle safely in case of emergency
- Ensure vehicle is correctly fueled according to department policy
- Prepare vehicle for student transport including inclement weather considerations, harnesses, and wheelchair tie‑downs
- Operate school buses, wheelchair lifts, radios, and other equipment safely
- Complete reports and paperwork promptly (maintenance requests, behavior referrals, timecards, directions, etc.)
- Utilize technology when required
- Report any safety or maintenance concerns or moving violations to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- At least 18 years of age
- Valid Class B CDL license with school bus and passenger endorsements
- Valid DOT physical and Medical Certificate per FMCSA requirements
- Pass pre‑employment and periodic background checks, agility tests, driving history checks, substance abuse screening, alcohol/drug tests
- Register and maintain an account with FMCSA Clearinghouse and respond to queries within 24 hours
- Effective problem‑solving skills
- Knowledge of or ability to navigate Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Accept and implement coaching and training
- Professional driving experience preferred (not required)
Physical Demands
- Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods
- Ascending and descending 14" steps regularly
- Entering and exiting vehicles regularly
- Repeating lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds over 100+ feet; pushing/pulling wheelchairs/objects of same weight
- Continuous use of hands, fingers, and wrists
- Using both hands and legs simultaneously
- Repeated stooping, bending, kneeling
- Occasional pushing/pulling and maintaining balance
- Reach overhead to 72" height to operate wheelchair lift
- Rapid mental/muscular coordination
- Verbal, auditory, written communication capabilities
- Accurate depth perception, clear vision at varying distances
- Operate mobile motorized equipment and drive a vehicle
Hazards
- Possible contact with blood borne pathogens and bodily fluids
- Contact with chemicals used for cleaning buses
Environment
- Indoor/outdoor environment with changing temperatures, including extreme heat and cold
- Direct contact with public, students, and district staff
- Possible exposure to heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, odors, tight deadlines, and changing priorities
- Work with moving vehicles, motorized wheelchair lifts, and other equipment
