Bus Driver (Full-time, Year Round)
Position Type: Full-time.
Ensure the safe and orderly transportation of District students and/or staff while operating District school vehicles to and from schools or other designated locations over specified routes according to specific time schedules.
Responsibilities
- Operate District vehicles to transport students and/or staff to and from assigned routes, following strict time schedules and route instructions.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and the community.
- Obey all Federal/State laws, traffic laws and regulations; Board Policies, and Administrative Regulations and/or rules.
- Perform daily pre and post-trip inspections, submitting completed designated inspection forms for each route/trip to ensure safety.
- Maintain safety precautions, operate vehicles courteously.
- Follow safety rules during boarding and exiting.
- Implement student management/behavior strategies, train students on safety regulations and District policies.
- Communicate student behavior issues and other questionable situations to the Transportation Manager or appropriate authority.
- Operate all assigned communication equipment in a timely and professional manner.
- Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation for passenger comfort.
- Keep vehicle interiors clean.
- Participate in required District training.
- Report any equipment damage, accidents, and injuries immediately.
- Prepare emergency evacuation plans and perform semi-annual evacuation drills.
- Provide training to new driver candidates for CDL and endorsements.
- Deliver departmental training to staff, students, and classes on safety-related topics.
- Assist shop with shuttling equipment to/from outside vendors and equipment evaluation.
- Participate in bus pre‑start crew on cold weather days and in lot cleaning/snow removal, winter weather events.
- Assist with vehicle fueling and washing during high demand periods.
- Supervise summer bus cleaning operations and crew of 3‑5 cleaning personnel.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Up to 84 students while operating assigned District vehicle; 3‑5 personnel on bus cleaning crews.
Qualifications
- Minimum 21 years of age.
- Valid Iowa CDL (Class B) with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements.
- Ability to read maps and follow directions.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of Federal/State traffic laws.
- Strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
- Conflict resolution skills.
Physical Demands
Close and far vision, color vision, night vision, depth perception, peripheral vision. Occasionally lift up to 75 pounds. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting. Continuous driving. Quick responses to signals.
Work Environment
Work encountered in temperatures up to 100°F and below 32°F, on slippery surfaces; high noise level; must communicate loudly. Must meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
