The Staff Counsel Attorney role offers an opportunity to manage moderately complex civil litigation involving the corporation and its insureds, within established guidelines and professional standards. This primarily field-based role involves spending 80% of your time (4+ days per week) working in the field, directly engaging with customers, agents, and staff. Occasional travel to office locations for meetings, training, or cultural events may be required.

Position Compensation Range: $109,000.00 - $185,000.00

Pay Rate Type: Salary

Compensation varies based on job level and geographic location. Relocation support is offered for eligible candidates.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Handle litigation involving the corporation and/or insureds within corporate guidelines and professional standards.
  2. Analyze files as litigation progresses; evaluate cases and seek settlement when appropriate.
  3. Conduct discovery, including interrogatories, requests for production, and depositions.
  4. Conduct motion practice.
  5. Draft pleadings, papers, and briefs; conduct research to support drafting.
  6. Manage litigated matters through trial, mediations, settlement conferences, and arbitration.
  7. Advocate for clients in various forums, both formal and informal.
  8. Stay current on relevant statutes and court decisions, analyzing their impact on policy interpretation and enforcement.
  9. Develop expertise in specific practice areas as needed.
Knowledge & Skills Requirements
  1. Experience providing customer-driven solutions and support.
  2. Experience preparing civil pleadings, motions, discovery, and deposing witnesses.
  3. Litigation experience.
  4. Understanding of Professional Responsibility rules applicable to practice jurisdiction.
  5. Knowledge of tort, contract, and insurance law.
  6. Bar admission in the practicing state or within one year of hire; or eligibility for in-house counsel registration.
  7. Juris Doctor degree.
Additional Skills
  • Admitted to the California State Bar is strongly preferred.
Other Requirements
  • Travel up to 50%.
  • Work primarily involves sitting and standing.
