Job summary

City of Columbia, SC is seeking a skilled groundworker to prune and remove trees in city rights-of-way and on other city properties. The role involves operating trucks, bucket trucks, chain saws, wood chippers and other tools, with emphasis on safety and adherence to procedures.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, some prior experience, and valid SC driver's licenses (D with ability to obtain B within a year). The work is physically demanding and outdoors in varying conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Some relevant prior experience preferred.
• Valid South Carolina Class D Driver’s License required.
• Ability to obtain SC Class B license within 1 year of hire/promotion.

Responsibilities

• Prune or remove trees in City rights-of-way and on City properties as directed.
• Drive and operate trucks and bucket truck; operate chain saws, wood chippers and other tools as necessary.
• Load/unload materials onto vehicles.
• Inspect equipment and report defects or maintenance needs to supervisor.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
• Assist in providing instruction and leadership of lower-level crew members.
• Perform work in compliance with policies, safety standards; attend required training.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
