The State of California is seeking a Tree Maintenance Worker in California to trim, shape, and remove trees. The role includes applying pesticides and performing aerial rescues as needed while ensuring safety standards are met.
Candidates must be able to operate various equipment, including aerial tools and trucks, and have a valid California Driver’s License. This position may require overnight travel and working irregular shifts.
$4,870.00 – $6,101.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
Under the supervision of the Caltrans Tree Maintenance Supervisor, the Tree Maintenance Worker will trim, shape, and remove trees, apply pesticides along transportation facility rights‑of‑way, and within state facilities. The Tree Maintenance Worker will perform aerial rescue when required. The Tree Maintenance Worker may be assigned to other operational units and/or geographical areas as operational needs dictate and may be required to work nights and/or weekends and possible overtime. Overnight travel out of town up to 80 percent of the time may be required to meet operational needs.
The Tree Maintenance Worker operates a variety of equipment, including trucks, personnel hoists, brush chippers, and aerial equipment. They perform heavy labor associated with tree work, climb trees by means of ropes or spurs, utilize safety belt and other required rigging, trim and remove limbs and branches, lower‑cut limbs and branches near utility lines, remove and trim felled and hazard trees, and cut brush along the state rights‑of‑way and at state facilities. The Tree Maintenance Worker uses power and hand saws, axes, wedges, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and other similar power and hand tools, and maintains tree climbing and trimming equipment.

May be exposed to loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather conditions, great heights, confined spaces, uneven and unstable terrain, and next to vehicle traffic. Workers will be required to wear all personal protective equipment and follow all policies and procedures. Work will involve rotating or irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, overtime, and the ability to respond to after‑hour emergencies.
