Job summary

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Telemetry/Progressive Care Unit position in Virginia, requiring cardiac drip proficiency and prior travel nursing experience. The role covers PCU, Medical Overflow, Observation, and Surgical areas with 12-hour night shifts and multiple unit float requirements.

Candidates must hold a VA or compact license, BLS/ACLS/NIHSS, and have EPIC EMR experience, with 1–2 years of relevant clinical work and ECG interpretation ability.

Qualifications

• Active RN license in VA or compact state
• BLS, ACLS, NIHSS certifications required
• 1–2 years of experience with neuro assessments and basic cardiac drips
• Experience with cardizem, amiodarone, and heparin drips including drip titration
• EPIC EMR experience required
• Prior travel nursing experience required
• Ability to read ECGs and pass ECG exam

Responsibilities

• Hospital-based PCU/Telemetry unit including PCU, Medical Overflow, Observation, and Surgical areas
• Care for stroke rule-out, chest pain, arrhythmias, and post-surgical cases
• Patient ratios: 1:4 on PCU/Overflow/Observation, 1:5 on Medical/Surgical
• Patient care techs available at 1:8–11 depending on unit
• RT equipment includes CPAP and high flow oxygen
• Off-site tele monitoring; read and interpret own strips
• Uses EPIC EMR system
• 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a
• May float to all PCU/Tele units, with rare ICU/ER floats
• Minimum 4 weekend shifts in 6 weeks
• No on-call requirements
• Provide direct patient care across telemetry and progressive care units
• Respond to respiratory changes and escalate to physicians
• Communicate strip changes and status updates to care team
• Orientation includes 3 shifts across 3 units plus general facility orientation
• Navy scrubs required
• Holiday coverage for 1 major and 1 minor holiday
• Clock in by 6:53 AM and clock out by 7:23 AM

• Patient population includes stroke rule-out, chest pain, arrhythmias, abdominal pain, post-surgical, altered mental status, dehydration, AKI, CHF, GI hemorrhage, and sepsis cases
• Patient ratios are 1:4 for PCU, Overflow, and Observation, and 1:5 (rarely 1:6) for Medical and Surgical units
• Patient care techs available at ratios of 1:8-11 depending on unit
• RT equipment on unit includes CPAP and high flow oxygen
• Off-site tele monitoring with RNs required to read and interpret their own strips
• Uses EPIC EMR
• 12-hour night shifts, 7p-7a
• Required to float to all PCU/Tele units within the hospital, including PCU, Observation, Overflow, Medical, and Surgical floors, with possible rare floats to ICU or ER
• Minimum of 4 weekend shifts required within a 6-week period
• No on-call requirements
• Provide direct patient care across multiple telemetry and progressive care unit settings based on hospital needs
• Respond to respiratory changes and elevate to physicians as needed
• Communicate strip changes and patient status updates to the care team
• Orientation includes 3 shifts across 3 different units in addition to general facility orientation
