The Indiana University School of Medicine’s Acute Care Surgery Division and IU Health Physicians are actively seeking a highly qualified surgeon with fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery. The Medical Director reflects the mission, vision, and values of the Adult Academic Health Center, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a leading academic hospital and quaternary care center in Indiana and the region.

Institutional Highlights:

  • Scheduled to open in the 4th Quarter of 2027, a new $4.3 billion Indiana University Health Hospital and Academic Health Center will feature 864 beds, with roughly one-third dedicated to critical care, adaptable to patient needs.
  • The Medical Education and Research Building will house classrooms, labs, technology, and experts to address complex medical challenges.
  • The overarching goal is to improve Indiana residents’ health, train new physicians, and revolutionize care through research.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Acute Care Surgery services (trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care) across various settings including ED, OR, ICU, floors, and clinics.
  • Engage in teaching and mentoring students, residents, and fellows in all aspects of acute care surgery.
  • Participate in clinical research within one of the largest medical schools in the country.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including 25+ Acute Care Surgery APPs, to deliver high-quality patient care.

Medical Director, Surgical Critical Care Responsibilities:

  • Develop policies and protocols for the SICU.
  • Lead surgical staff education and critical care expansion activities.
  • Represent the department on critical care committees within the AHC.
  • Site Director for the ACGME-accredited surgical critical care fellowship at IU Methodist Hospital.
  • Develop a research agenda for critical care.
  • Provide education for residents and fellows.
  • Report to the Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
  • Attend on critical care, trauma, and acute care surgery services.
  • Review cases for peer review and monitor ICU quality measures, including TQIP participation.
  • Participate in Trauma Center Reverification process.

Qualifications:

  • M.D., D.O., or equivalent; fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery; Board certification or eligibility in Surgical Critical Care.
  • Strong commitment to teaching, research, and clinical excellence.
  • Experience working with adult populations, including those with communication barriers or physical limitations.

Preferred:

  • Over 3 years’ experience at an academic institution.
  • Record of scholarship, especially in critical care.
  • Leadership training and experience.
  • Proficiency in ICU procedures, protocols, and operations.

Compensation: Salary and academic/clinical rank commensurate with experience. Includes generous CME allowance, research, and professional support.
