Job summary

Inova Health System in Virginia seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Trauma Surgery Advanced Practice Provider team. You will assess and manage acutely injured patients from the trauma bay through ICU and floor, collaborating with trauma surgeons and a critical care team.

Candidates should have completed an adult-gero acute care NP/PA program, possess board certification, and hold Virginia licensure with DEA; ATLS is required on hire or soon after.

Qualifications

• Master's or Doctorate from an accredited adult-gero acute care NP or PA program.
• Board certification as adult-gero acute care NP or PA.
• Current Virginia state licensure.
• DEA license required.
• BLS and ACLS for Healthcare Provider (expires >90 days from start).
• ATLS on hire, or within 3–6 months.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of the surgical team.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with trauma surgeons to assess and manage acutely injured or critically ill patients.
• Manage patients in the emergency department, ICU, intermediate care unit, and floor.
• Administer medications and treatments.
• Monitor vital signs, labs, and treatment response.
• Assist or perform privileged procedures (central venous catheter, tube thoracostomy, arterial line, bronchoscopy).
• Maintain Advanced Trauma Life Support competency.
• Educate patients and families on plan of care and postoperative management.
• Communicate with the surgical team about patient status and changes.
• Participate in quality improvement and clinical research projects.
• Maintain accurate and complete patient records.
• Rotating days, nights, and weekends.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate to join our team in the trauma surgery department of our Trauma Center. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will provide services to the acutely injured patient across the care continuum, from the trauma bay to the intensive care unit and floor. Our APPs perform initial assessments of the injured patient, admissions, procedures, education, and discharges, all while working collaboratively with a team of board-certified trauma and critical care surgeons.

Clinicians care for critically ill patients with traumatic injury, respiratory failure, severe arrhythmias and cardiac arrest, sepsis and septic shock, intracranial hemorrhage, altered mental status, coma, and more. Trauma APPs treat patients in multiple settings and are always available to see acutely injured patients anywhere in the hospital

Trauma Surgery Advanced Practice Provider Job Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with trauma surgeons to assess and manage the care of acutely injured or critically ill surgical patients in the inpatient setting.
• Management of patients in the emergency department, intensive care unit, intermediate care unit, and floor.
• Administer medications and treatments.
• Monitor patients' vital signs, laboratory values, and response to treatment.
• Assist or perform appropriately privileged procedures, such as central venous catheter placement, tube thoracostomy, arterial line placement, and bronchoscopy.
• Obtain and maintain advanced trauma life support.
• Provide education to patients and their families on the plan of care and post-operative management.
• Communicate effectively with the surgical team regarding patient status and changes in condition.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research projects.
• Maintain accurate and complete patient records.
• Rotating days, nights, and weekends

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's or Doctorate preparation from an accredited program as an adult (or adult-gero) acute care nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate
• Board certification as an adult (or adult-gero) acute care nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate
• Current state licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• DEA license required
• BLS and ACLS for Healthcare Provider with an expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice
• ATLS on hire, or within 3-6 months, depending on experience
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of the surgical team
• Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working as an Advanced Practice Provider in a Trauma or Critical Care setting
