Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing with a degree plan to complete if applicable.
  • Current Texas license to practice as a professional nurse; BLS/ACLS may be implied.
  • Experience: 5 years in clinical trauma care; 3 years in progressive supervision/management.
  • TNCC/ATCN course current or within required timeframe; education in trauma programs.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and with teams.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee trauma department operations and ensure quality of care.
  • Monitor patient care quality across hospitalization and drive improvements.
  • Collaborate with unit leadership to design performance projects and education.
  • Coordinate trauma service reviews with multidisciplinary teams for quality outcomes.
  • Ensure designation/verification requirements by Texas DSHS and ACS are met.
  • Develop corrective action plans and communicate findings to leadership.
  • Lead community outreach and trauma injury prevention initiatives.
  • Participate in trauma committees and professional organizations; mentor staff.
  • Uphold safety, policy adherence, and budget, while promoting professional growth.

Job Summary

The Manager of Trauma Program works collaboratively with key stakeholders including process owners, organization leaders and physicians. They are responsible for trauma related performance improvement, injury prevention, education, research, outreach and trauma registry operations. This individual also must be able to synthesize and quantify relevant trauma data for quality improvement. The Manager works with the Trauma Medical Director and senior facility leadership in preparing for and maintaining designation by the Texas Department of State Health Services and/or verification by the American College of Surgeons.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing; Bachelors degree or educational plan to complete degree.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Current State of Texas license/permit to practice professional nursing; PALS or the Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC).
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Five (5) years of clinical trauma care in the hospital setting and three (3) of progressive supervisory/management experience.
  • Maintains current Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) or Advanced Trauma Course for Nurses (ATCN).
  • Within 60 days of hire, completion of a trauma performance improvement course approved by the department.
  • Within 6 months of hire, completion of Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) Injury Scaling Course.
  • Renew the trauma performance improvement course either every 4 years or when a new version is released.
  • Complete 36 hours of trauma related continuing education (CE) tri-annually.
  • A course specific to the Trauma Program Manager role is recommended.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently, and in collaboration with groups.
  • Knowledge of computer software including: word, excel, power-point and outlook programs.
  • Understanding of trauma scoring scales to include AIS and ISS.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Accountable for overseeing the operations of the Trauma department.
  • Monitors the quality of patient care delivered throughout the patient’s hospitalization.
  • Collaborates with hospital unit leadership to develop performance improvement projects and education as needs are identified.
  • Collaborates with the facility’s Trauma Service to ensure successful case reviews at the multidisciplinary level designed to improve the quality of trauma care.
  • Ensures designation and/or verification requirements stipulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the American College of Surgeon are achieved or maintained.
  • Collaborates with leaders to develop corrective action plan if gaps are identified and communicates the deficiencies and action plan to upper administration.
  • Oversees and participates in community outreach and trauma injury prevention.Holds current membership in a national or regional trauma organization.
  • Demonstrates evidence of participation in trauma committees at the Memorial Hermann System level and the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council level.
  • Participation in state and national trauma organizations is strongly encouraged.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
