Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) seeks a Youth Engagement Coordinator to plan, implement, and document structured recreation and wellness programs for youth in DJJ facilities. You will create trauma-informed, engaging activities to reduce idle time and promote pro-social behavior, while aligning with the master schedule and agency expectations.

You'll lead monthly calendars, incentive-based activities, and ensure safe, developmentally appropriate programs.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of wellness programming (physical, emotional, behavioral health).
• Understanding of trauma-informed care and youth development principles.
• Ability to facilitate structured activities and group sessions.
• Knowledge of behavior management and de-escalation strategies.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to engage and motivate youth in a structured environment.
• Must be mobile and able to intervene with youth when applicable.

Responsibilities

• Executes programming aligned with master schedule to minimize idle time.
• Supervises youth engagement during activities with clear expectations.
• Designs trauma-informed recreation and wellness programming.
• Develops monthly programming calendars and incentive systems.
• Maintains safety and accountability of materials and spaces.
• Performs duties to support division priorities and emergencies.
