Job summary

St. Joseph Health seeks a Patient Transporter to provide essential patient movement across the campus. You will verify patients with two identifiers, transport patients and materials, and maintain a safe, clean work area while reporting any equipment issues.

A strong focus on patient safety and customer service is required. You will coordinate with nursing staff, follow department procedures, and ensure smooth handoffs. CPR certification and high school completion are required upon hire.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate General Studies or GED upon hire.
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification within 14 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Verify and transport the correct patient using at least two identifiers.
• Transport patients, charts, specimens and equipment safely to treatment and diagnostic areas.
• Notify nursing staff of patient status and destinations; obtain necessary paperwork and equipment.
• Assist in transfers from bed to transport mode and obtain nursing instructions for special handling.
• Return patients to bed using proper techniques and ensure patient needs are met upon return.
• Notify dispatcher of completion and follow instructions during delays or problems.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Patient Transporter, you will provide essential assistance and transportation for patients and related items across our campus, ensuring a highly customer-sensitive and seamless experience. Every day you will promptly and safely transport inpatients and outpatients to and from various hospital areas. You will meticulously confirm patient identification, greet and assist in transferring patients, and make conscious observations of patient condition during transport, reporting any issues to appropriate personnel. You will also maintain a clean and organized work area and report any malfunctioning equipment. To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate a strong commitment to patient safety and exceptional customer service for all individuals within our facility. You will be attentive, observant, and capable of performing duties efficiently while upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism.

• Follows established department procedure to accurately verify and transport the proper patient by visually checking patient identification or verifying with nursing staff. Always uses a minimum of two patient identifiers.
• Transports patients, charts, specimens and required equipment to various treatment and diagnostic areas throughout the hospital in a safe and efficient manner 100% of the time. Provides emergency assistance to patients who become ill during transport process until proper staff can be notified and assistance arrives.
• Reports to nursing units and notifies nursing staff of patient being transported and destination. Verifies mode of transportation and pre‑op status. Obtains patient chart and necessary paperwork and/or equipment.
• Initiates or assists in transfer process of patients from bed to mode of transportation. Requests and obtains instruction/assistance from nursing staff for patients that require isolation techniques, two‑man lifts, bedpan/restroom assistance or that have support devices requiring special handling.
• Returns patient to bed utilizing proper transfer techniques 100% of the time to avoid injury to patient and/or self. Verifies that patient's basic needs are satisfied upon return to bed. Places call light beside table within patient's reach, ensures monitors are reattached and bed alarm is turned on if applicable. Offers to put away personal items and reports patient's needs to nursing staff. Reports patient has been returned to nursing unit.
• Notifies dispatcher of completion of assigned duties and proceeds as instructed. If a delay or problem occurs in transporting a patient, transporter informs dispatcher immediately and proceeds according to instruction issued.
