Description of Work

This is a repost. All previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Davidson County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right-of-way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Position will operate various pieces of equipment, including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

  • Ability to be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail.

An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG‑01) and a background statement (ALCDRG‑06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety‑toed shoes required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 / $39,244 - $68,679

  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience with one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operation
Minimum Education and Experience
