Job summary

The State of West Virginia is seeking a Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator to support highway construction and maintenance on state roads. This role involves operating heavy highway maintenance equipment, performing major and minor repairs, and maintaining equipment under general supervision.

The position may require work beyond 40 hours, irregular shifts, and exposure to hazardous conditions. A CDL Class A or B is required, and progression through the U.S.

Qualifications

Job description

  • Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.” The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator will report to the Lincoln County Headquarters. This position, under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include: operating motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Making major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Making minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • Tier 1 hourly rate: $18.3938

  • Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
  • Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
  • Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
  • Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
  • Repair and construct various culvert types.
  • Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
  • Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
  • Clean equipment and workshop.
  • Transport fuel to equipment.
  • Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.

  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Experience

EXPERIENCE: A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. No Substitutions for Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
