Job summary

State of West Virginia is seeking an entry-level Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator to perform apprentice level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in highway construction and maintenance. You will operate light maintenance equipment, perform rough carpentry, and support snow plowing as needed.

A CDL is required within six months of employment, and advancement depends on hours, training, and CDL attainment.

Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.” The Transportation Worker 1 performs apprentice level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Position will be assigned as an Equipment Operator. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment to repair and replace concrete and bituminous road surfaces, cleans culverts, and repairs shoulders. Performs rough carpentry and builds forms. Operates various maintenance equipment. May also mow or clear bush from along roads or DOH facilities using a hand scythe or hand mower. May plow snow using a light truck. Performs related duties as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment to obtain commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Examples of Work
Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator
  • Operate a light truck or vehicle.
  • Operate a fork truck to load and unload trucks.
  • May operate End loader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Bruch Chipper.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
  • Perform minor maintenance on fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport fuel to equipment.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Flags traffic at construction sites.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Salary and Wages

Annual Increment Pay

The annual increment is $60 for each full year of qualifying service, and is paid in July of each year. This is available to employees with 3 or more years of service.

Holidays

Twelve (12) paid holidays in each year.

Vacation

15 to 24 days per year depending on length of service.

Paid Sick Leave

We offer an outstanding paid sick leave benefit. Employees earn 1.5 days each month or 18 days per year. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave an employee can accumulate. Full compliance with Family Medical Leave and WV Parental Leave Act. Employee to Employee Leave Donation Program.
