Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Specialist I/II in the Bryan District Traffic Section. The role supports coordination of engineering projects, contract administration, and compliance with traffic control standards.

Responsibilities include reviewing plans, supervising consultants, and ensuring safe highway operations. Candidates must have a related bachelor’s degree and a valid driver’s license; position offers solid benefits and a comprehensive total compensation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a state vehicle.

  • Investigates public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, and related items.
  • Prepares and distributes strip maps for speed zones.
  • Reviews and oversees plan packages from consultants.
  • Reviews construction records to ensure compliance with plans and specs.

Job description

Essential Duties
  • Assists with administering and monitoring district maintenance contracts and service agreements.
  • Ensures compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, and regulations; and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Inspects railroad crossings to identify devices to be installed or upgraded; reviews draft railroad signal construction and re-planking plans.
  • Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.
  • Prepares and distributes strip maps for speed zones.
  • Researches and evaluates data, interprets and analyzes results, prepares reports and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Reviews and oversees plan packages submitted by consultants.
  • Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for Transportation Specialist II
  • Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of advanced engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion.
Minimum Qualifications
Education

Bachelor\'s Degree in a related discipline.

Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis.

Transportation Specialist I: 2 years

Transportation Specialist II: 4 years

Experience must be in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
