Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Substitutions for minimum qualifications with related college education or technical training may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license and CDL are required for operating state vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Review and coordinate with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, and revised quantities.
  • Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspect construction methods and contract maintenance for compliance with plans, specs, and safety standards.
  • Inspect traffic control devices and their placement per TXDOT standards and regulations.
  • Monitor construction records to ensure compliance with federal EE0/DBE requirements.
  • Perform detail design and quantity checks for plans, specs, and estimates (PS&E).
  • Develop traffic control plans and coordinate with law enforcement; manage lane closures and public information coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assist Traffic Engineer in planning and coordinating Traffic Section operations.
  • Consult with contractors on work progress and review equipment utilization data.

Job Summary

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties
  • Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs.
  • Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E).
  • Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for General Engineering Tech II
  • Assists Traffic Engineer in planning and coordinating Traffic Section operations.
  • Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

General Engineering Tech I: 4 years

General Engineering Tech II: 6 years

Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
