Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) in Wisconsin’s Southeast Region seeks a Transportation Specialist Advanced in the materials unit. The role focuses on materials acceptance, project materials documentation, and independent verification of testing procedures for concrete and aggregate materials.

The position is hybrid, headquartered in Waukesha, WI, with at least 2 days on-site. Competent in AASHTO/ASTM/WisDOT specs and guidance to staff are essential.

Qualifications

  • Currently hold at least two of the following testing certifications: CST (Concrete Strength Testing), AGGTEC-1 (Aggregate Technician 1), HMA-IPT (Asphalt Technician 1), PCCTEC-1 (Portland Cement Concrete Technician 1), Nuclear Density Technician I, Grading Technician I and ATTS.
  • Experience with engineering principles and methods including using engineering software, reviewing plats or surveys, reading and interpreting technical documents, construction inspection, material testing, and preparing plans/bid documents.
  • Experience working in a construction material testing laboratory following standardized testing procedures (AASHTO, ASTM, WisDOT).

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical assignments in support of the Region's material program and independent Assurance Program.
  • Interpret specifications (AASHTO, ASTM & WisDOT) to ensure adherence to contract specs.
  • Provide guidance to WisDOT, consulting, and City of Milwaukee staff on materials acceptance and documentation.
  • Review region materials records for Local Program highway projects for accuracy and completeness; train personnel in sampling and testing of materials used in bridges and highways.

Job Title Transportation Specialist Advanced - Materials Specialist

Join the WisDOT team and make a difference in Wisconsin roadways. The Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking a Transportation Specialist Advanced in materials unit of the Southeast Region. This position will be headquartered at 141 NW Barstow Street in Waukesha.

This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the Waukesha State Office Building in Waukesha, WI at least 2 days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary

This position performs technical assignments in support of the Region's material program and the federally mandated Independent Assurance Program.Assignments are in the area of materials acceptance, individual project materials documentation and resolving of non-specification materials issues.This position will have an emphasis on performing the independent verification of the state's sampling and testing procedures for quality control of concrete testing and aggregate sampling.

This position interprets specification requirements (AASHTO, ASTM & WisDOT specification) and reviews the applications of these requirements to assure adherence to all contract specifications as required by WisDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.They provide guidance and assistance to WisDOT, Consulting, and City of Milwaukee engineering staff, in administration of materials acceptance and documentation procedures.

The position reviews materials records for all of the Region’s Local Program highway improvement projects for accuracy and completeness. They also prepare proper materials acceptance procedures and provide training to project personnel in proper methods of sampling and testing of materials incorporated in the construction of bridges and highways.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $68,640-$93,600, plus excellent benefits. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.
