Transportation Security Officers

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Salary Information: The salary range for Memphis, TN (MEM - Memphis International Airport) is $43,876 to $56,282 or $21.02 to $26.97 per hour, including locality pay of 17.06%.

This position is located within the Transportation Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As a TSO within Security Operations, you will provide security for air travelers, airports, and aircraft. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Qualifications

To qualify for the SV-D pay band (equivalent to GS-5/6), you must meet one of the following:

1. Experience: At least one year of full-time work experience in security, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician.
2. Education: High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC high school equivalency certificate.

Experience is credited based on a 40-hour workweek; part-time experience is credited proportionally. Volunteer experience through National Service programs or other organizations is also credited.

Additional Requirements

• Travel: Occasional travel for training and other duties, paid and reimbursed per TSA policy.
• Selective Service: Verification required for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
• Credit Check: Applicants must not have delinquent taxes or child support.
• Residency: Must have resided in the U.S. for three of the last five years, with exceptions.
• Reemployed Annuitants: May have salary reduced by pension amount.
• Appearance: Must adhere to TSA dress and appearance standards, including covering tattoos and body piercings as specified.

Work Schedule

Full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time shifts determined by the airport, including irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays. Specific schedules will be set by the airport.

Maintaining Employment

Requires ongoing certification, training, background checks, and drug screening. No travel expenses are paid for employment or application processes.

Additional Notes

This position is not law enforcement and does not include Law Enforcement Retirement or Law Enforcement Availability Pay. TSA employment does not confer 'Competitive Status'; however, employees with over a year of service may apply for other federal positions under certain agreements.
