Job summary

City of Durham is seeking a Transportation Planner to drive Vision Zero initiatives within the Transportation Department. The role focuses on advancing data-driven road safety projects, dashboards, and community engagement to reduce traffic deaths and injuries.

You will work on audits, quick-build safety projects, and data sharing while coordinating with multiple divisions to meet Vision Zero goals and public safety improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
• One or more years of related experience.
• Valid NC Class C Driver's License.
• Eager to dive into and lead strategic actions
• Strong skills in GIS (ArcGIS Online, ArcPro, or QGIS) and data management (Excel, Google Sheets, Power BI, SQL, etc.)
• Experience or coursework in transportation planning, urban studies, data analytics, or public policy

Responsibilities

• Help to implement the 2025 Vision Zero Action Plan, including but not limited to Road Safety Audits, quick-build projects, developing a Speed Management Plan, and promoting traffic safety insights
• Manage the Vision Zero Data Dashboard and Transportation Department Project Tracking Database, both Esri applications requiring strong GIS skills and expertise
• Identify engaging and innovative ways to share data with other City departments and with the public.
• Develop data evaluation mechanisms and reports, including before/after evaluations, to show the effectiveness of street safety treatments and lessons learned
• Collaborate with staff across multiple divisions to understand current data structures and needs
• Assist with community engagement events, including creative ways to engage with the public around street safety issues

The City of Durham is committed to Vision Zero with a goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries. The Transportation Planner position, housed in the Transportation Department, will play a critical role in the implementation of the 2025 Vision Zero Action Plan.

The Transportation Planner has the opportunity to play a leading role in advancing Vision Zero in Durham. With six key strategies in the Vision Zero Action Plan, this position will participate in and orchestrate Road Safety Audits, work with the community to implement quick-build safety projects, and manage information-sharing, including the maintenance and promotion of the Vision Zero Data Dashboard and Transportation Department Project Tracking Dashboard.

Hours: Monday- Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., 30-40 hours/per week

Compensation: $30-$60/hour
