JOB TITLE: Transportation Operations Assistant

SUPERVISOR: Director of Transportation

WORK SCHEDULE: Part-time, approximately 3.5 hrs/day, 9 months (school year)

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, the Transportation Operations Assistant supports the daily operation of the district's pupil transportation program. This position is responsible for planning and maintaining bus routes, securing substitute driver coverage for routes and trips, monitoring routing, GPS, and camera systems, reporting school bus stop-arm and traffic violations to the appropriate law enforcement authorities, assisting with the training of bus drivers, and performing other transportation-related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, plan, and maintain efficient student bus routes and stops using district routing software; keep student ridership, address, and stop information current and accurate.
  • Monitor GPS tracking and bus camera systems; review route data and video footage as needed to address safety concerns, incidents, complaints, or disciplinary matters.
  • Identify daily route and driver coverage needs and contact and secure qualified substitute drivers in a timely manner to ensure all routes are covered.
  • Coordinate scheduling of drivers for field trips and extracurricular/athletic trips, including contacting and securing substitute drivers to cover trips or routes as needed.
  • Complete and submit school bus stop-arm and red light violation reports to the State Highway Patrol and other appropriate law enforcement agencies; maintain accurate records of all reported violations.
  • Assist the Director of Transportation in training new and current bus drivers on routes, district policies and procedures, and safe operating practices; support ongoing driver in-service training.
  • Communicate professionally with drivers, school staff, parents, and the public regarding routes, schedules, delays, and transportation concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and personnel information in accordance with district policy and applicable law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Valid Ohio School Bus Driver Certificate required.
  • Ohio Bus Inspector (OBI) Certificate required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Prior experience in school transportation, routing, dispatch, or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of student transportation routing software, GPS tracking, and bus camera systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal pupil transportation laws, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple routes, schedules, and coverage needs simultaneously, often under time pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgment in emergency or time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with drivers, staff, students, parents, and the public.
Supervision

This position reports directly to the Director of Transportation and receives day‑to‑day direction from that office. This position does not have direct supervisory authority over other staff but may provide route and safety guidance to bus drivers as part of training duties.
