An employee in this class performs complex duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Most work is performed based on prior experience. The employee is expected to resolve problems of medium difficulty with little assistance while others may be referred to a supervisor. Most errors may be expected to be resolved by the employee. The employee receives general supervision and work is occasionally reviewed while in progress.
Under general supervision, performs journeyman work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment of the School System Transportation Department. Work involves identifying, diagnosing, and repairing malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment, testing equipment for compliance with safety standards, and operating specialized power tools to recondition complete sub‑assemblies. The employee is also responsible for checking lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper function; performing engine and other sub‑assembly checks; and performing N.C. Motor Vehicle Inspections on all motor vehicles. Reports to the Mechanic III‑Shop Foreman.
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board and local policy on evaluation of personnel.
