JOB TITLE: MECHANIC II

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, performs journeyman work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment of the School System Transportation Department. Work involves identifying, diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment, testing equipment for compliance with safety standards and operating specialized power tools to recondition complete sub‑assemblies. The employee is also responsible for checking lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper function, performing engine and other sub‑assembly checks, and performing N.C. Motor Vehicle Inspections on all motor vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate a safety mindset at all times; ensure safe buses for students, a safe working environment for fellow workers and monitor safe movements of school and activity buses while operating on public streets and highways.
• Assist in identifying, diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment, including checking worn components, push rods, valve springs, head assembly, rocker arms, valve seals, head gaskets, intake gaskets, and torquing all components to specifications.
• Check and rebuild carburetors, water pumps and fuel pumps; check and replace timing chains and gears, radiators, hoses, belts, vacuum hoses, mufflers, converters, tail pipes, king pins, wheel bearings, tire rods, ball joints, steering gear boxes, power steering pumps, starters, batteries, alternators, brakes, diesel engine injectors, injector pumps and glow plugs.
• Operate specialized power tools (air gun, air hammer, air chisels, air ratchets, air drills), brake lathe, bearing presser, tire machine and forklift to recondition complete sub‑assemblies.
• Check wiring systems for electrical problems; repair and replace lights, switches, buzzers, gauges, steering wheel and horn kit, headlights, brake lights, light covers, bulbs.
• Perform engine and other sub‑assembly repairs, including replacement of cams, lifters, rings, crankshafts, pistons, rod bearings, main bearings, oil pumps, and measure bearing clearance.
• Perform N.C. Motor Vehicle Inspections and N.C. Board of Education School Bus Preventive Maintenance checks and repairs.
• Perform body repair and painting as needed.
• Do re‑upholstery work and glass replacement, including window latches, side glasses, windshields, mirrors, seat latches, seat cushions and seat covers.
• Respond to road emergencies such as breakdowns and accidents and provide needed assistance.
• Drive fuel and tire trucks to field when needed.
• Perform other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Graduation from high school and 3 to 5 years of training or experience in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Physical requirements: able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including welders, tire balancers, forklifts, buses and wreckers; capable of exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly; able to lift and carry weights of 50 to 100 pounds. Physical demand is Medium to Heavy Work.

Considerable knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials and equipment used in repair and maintenance of vehicles.

Working knowledge of internal combustion engine principles and hydraulic systems.

Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance and repair.
