Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This is an FLSA non-exempt position*. The Transportation Manager directs and supervises subordinate staff, including assigning and delegating work projects as needed. Scheduling employees to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained. Evaluating work performance, coaching, mentoring and or implementing corrective action for performance and conduct issues. This position is responsible for the coordination of all countywide transportation programs.

The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills, and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time-to-time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Take transportation related phone calls.
  • Determine the needs for county-wide transportation services.
  • Schedule all staff for specific transportation needs.
  • Use appropriate computer technology to coordinate transportation.
  • Make recommendations to the LCAT Director.
  • Advise management of staff development needs and ensure that all certifications are kept up to date.
  • Cooperate with current drug testing requirements.
  • Coordinate for repairs and maintenance of equipment as needed or requested by the Maintenance Coordinator or other management.
  • Organize all transportation records in an efficient manner and keep organized and available for the public.
  • Always treat all persons respectfully and cheerfully, regardless of the nature of the interaction.
  • Duty to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that employees get along with customers, the general public, fellow coworkers and management.
  • Being pleasant, respectful and civil with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
  • Be reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfill duties.
  • Must show up for work as scheduled.
  • Attend training conferences and meetings as required by KDOT or the Interim Director/County Commissioners.
  • Treat all persons respectfully and cheerfully at all times, regardless of nature of interaction. Use of good judgment in reporting unusual incidents, accidents, etc. to Transportation Manager in a timely manner.
  • Gather public transit daily, weekly and monthly reporting data, accurately.
  • Maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
  • Obligation to be reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfill duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Requires a valid and current Class C driver's license at all times.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of work experience in a related field is desirable.
  • Education: High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge: Must have knowledge of the boundaries and lines of the County and City of Emporia. Be aware of locally recognized landmarks as well as road numbers, names on mileposts and use of the County directory and maps. Must have the ability to receive, interpret and follow verbal and written instructions. Required to write and speak English fluently with the ability to speak a foreign language helpful.
  • Computer: Must have excellent computer skills. Experience with Word, Excel, Office and Publisher programs is helpful. Be able to operate tablet, telephone, copier, fax machine, etc.
  • Interpersonal: Frequent contact with the general public including the elderly and disabled. Must always be courteous and respectful.
  • Problem Solving: Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate fluently, both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical Requirements: Requires sufficient visual acuity to be able to read and write and operate equipment common to this position. Requires sufficient hearing levels to be able to effectively communicate with the general public, or coworkers directly or by telephone and radio. Requires being able to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds to a height of 36 inches. Requires being able to pass a physical exam, work screen and associated drug and alcohol screening in accordance with federal, state, and or local law.
