Position Information

We are looking for a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief to join our team. The right candidate will possess good leadership skills, computer knowledge, and organizational skills. Will be responsible for guiding sign crews, herbicide operations, and daily routine roadwork. Additional duties include scheduling, equipment management, safety oversight, and supporting general maintenance activities such as drainage work, pavement repair, traffic control, hazmat, and emergency call outs. Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions andtroubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ careerconversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.
  • Extensive knowledge of:
    • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of:
    • Incident management procedures
    • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
