Job summary

State of Connecticut Department of Transportation seeks a Transportation Engineer/Construction Management trainee in Connecticut. Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management by May 2027 is encouraged.

Qualifications

Position Highlights
  • Monday – Friday
  • Full time, 40 hours per week, first shift
  • Locations: New Haven, Newington, Norwich, Rocky Hill, Thomaston
  • Telework eligibility after successful completion of the training and test period, in accordance with the Telework Policy
  • Member of the P‑4 (Engineering, Scientific and Technical) bargaining unit
The Role
  • Problem solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
  • Contribute to providing safe and efficient transportation improvements for the traveling public
  • Utilize computer aided design software (MicroStation) and other applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Read and analyze construction plans and prepare estimates
Salary and Promotion

Starting salary $76,307 per year (effective 06/26/2026). After successful completion of the one‑year training program, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) with salary range $85,151 – $104,720 per year. After successful completion of the second year, promotion to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) with salary range $95,865 – $123,809 per year.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Travel availability for training, conferences, meetings, and field reviews
  • Optional: Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) license, Land Surveyor (LS) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) license, NICET Level III certification in relevant programs, or AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree
  • Engineering degree in a position‑relevant area (e.g., Electrical Engineering for electrical positions)
  • Experience with engineering or construction management software
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team to meet goals and objectives
  • Experience communicating technical information in person and in writing using Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint
  • Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications
  • Experience tracking and prioritizing activities or projects while adhering to deadlines and producing deliverables
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam
Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
  • Required to travel
Working Conditions

Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway or construction site environments and may experience moderate discomfort from year‑round weather conditions.
