Job summary

Position Information

Join the El Paso District Bridge Office as a Transportation Engineering Technician II and play a key role in delivering critical bridge infrastructure projects across the region. This position supports the development of bridge projects from concept through design by assisting with engineering analyses, preparing plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) packages, performing drafting and design calculations, and developing construction plan documents. The successful candidate will work closely with bridge engineers to prepare project deliverables, review plans for accuracy and compliance, and utilize advanced design software and drafting tools. In addition, this position participates in bridge inspection activities, including field investigations, condition assessments, documentation, and data collection to help ensure the safety and reliability of the state's transportation network. Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

• Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
• Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
• Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
• Prepares field notes.
• Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
• Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
• Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
• Works on reproduction of plans.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

2 years of experience in drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid US driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
• Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
• Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
• Crawling-moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet
• Standing-prolonged periods of time
• This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
